Latitude is probably the most important factor determining the climate of the Basque Country. The latitude of the Basque Country, between 42º and 43.5º north of the Equator, means that the country is in the temperate zone. This latitude also determines the length of the day, or in other words the hours of daylight, which vary between 16 hours a day in summer and around 9 hours a day in winter.
In the Cantabrian Basin area, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa enjoy a moderate climate in terms of temperature, although they do experience high rainfall. In Álava, however, the winters are fairly cold, with the possibility of frequent frosts, but there is less rain than on the coast.
