The official languages in the Basque Country are Basque and Spanish. Basque is the only non-Indo-European language on the Iberian Peninsula and in Western Europe, leading to linguists reserving a special place for Basque among the European languages. There are no known similar languages, at least in the surrounding area. The Basque language is one of the most characteristic hallmarks of the Basque Country, which is why over the last 20 years, thanks to the normalisation policies and the involvement of very active participants, it has been gradually incorporated into different social and cultural areas: education, university, administration, the media, etc., becoming part of daily life in many towns and cities.
