It is important to remember that any foreigner (citizen of an EU member state or not) living in the Basque Country is governed by Spanish Legislation. In the event of any legal problem, the best solution is to seek the advice of a lawyer. Anyone who has been detained in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country, regardless of the police force detaining them, has the right to a lawyer in all the police and legal centres.

If you find yourself involved in any problem related to the justice system, we recommend that you directly contact your embassy who will be able to provide a list of the lawyers who speak your language.
