Social Security

The Social Security System is the collection of regimes through which the State guarantees those within its scope of application the appropriate protection in the event of the contingencies and situations included in the law (temporary disability, maternity, invalidity, retirement, unemployment, etc.). This protection is obtained as a result of professional activity or through complying with the requirements for the non-contributory system, and extends to the family members or similar for whom the person has responsibility.

1 Scope of application

For the purposes of the contributory system the scope of application of the Social Security System includes, regardless of their sex, marital status or profession, all the Spaniards residing in Spain and the foreigners who are legally residing or present in Spain, as long as, in both cases, they carry out their activity in the national territory and are included in one of the following categories:

  • Employed
  • Self-employed
  • Partner employees of associated work cooperatives
  • Students
  • Public, civil or military employees
